Exploring Why Short Films Are Hotter Than Ever: A Panel Discussion

When you hear the names Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Dakota Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ethan Hawke, Pedro Pascal and Michael Cera, you think movie stars, right? Did you know they’ve all done short films within the past 10 years? Just last year in 2022, Academy Award-nominated actor Riz Ahmed won the Best Live Action Short Oscar for a short film he wrote and starred in called The Long Goodbye. Shorts are making a long-felt impact.

Join a fascinating discussion with award-winning short filmmakers, including a member of the Academy’s Short Film & Feature Animation Branch, who boast a wealth of knowledge from the secret world of short-form moviemaking. Learn more about why shorts are so popular with filmmakers and viewers, what makes a short film stand out, what short film distribution platforms are out there, how awards eligibility and selection works, and what festivals look for in shorts programming. This talk offers an opportunity to get to know some of our featured artists and hear the stories behind their shorts.
