Violence on Screen: Tackling Tough Subjects in Film

Join us for a engaging panel on a topic never before discussed at the festival in years prior… violence on screen. We all have unforgettable violent moments from movies seared into our brains, for better or for worse, for one reason or another. This multi-faceted conversation for filmmakers and audience members features a handful of special guests from the worlds of filmmaking, film criticism and film schools and is expected to run the gamut from tackling tough subject matters on screen, to trends over the years, the impact of practical and visual effects, as well as stand out films and scenes. Come prepared to hear insightful commentary from various perspectives and pose your own questions.

Led by Jean-Paul DiSciscio, filmmaker and associate professor of Cinema & Media Arts in the Communication Arts Department at the University of New Hampshire, with featured guests:

• Bruno Guaraná, Ph.D., master lecturer in the Film & Television Department at Boston University
• Odie Henderson, author, film critic for The Boston Globe, and member of the National Society of Film Critics
• Deborah Jaramillo, Ph.D., author and professor of Film & Television Studies in the Film & Television Department at Boston University
• Malcolm Turvey, Ph.D., professor and director of the Film & Media Studies Program at Tufts University
